Red Deer on Exmoor

Stags lose their antlers in the spring and then start to grow a new set of antlers through the summer which are covered in velvet as they grow. Each year the stags will grow an extra set of points. When fully grown the stags will scrape the velvet cover off by rubbing their antlers against tree's and bushes.

In the Autumn the stags will be in full rut with contenders sizing each other up and roaring at one another. If neither give way they will come to blows with their heads down and antlers locked in a bid to drive the other away and take possession of the hinds.
